Chabot/Ste-Marie

Le point de départ du travail de collaboration Chabot/Ste-Marie est la saisie numérique du sujet qu’ils veulent traiter. Ces images recadrées et rehaussées vont constituer la banque dans laquelle puisera un logiciel, KaléidoScope, qu’ils ont développé selon leurs besoins et qui permet de combiner des images par superposition, transparence, diffusion, dispersion, au moyen de balayages successifs.

Le rôle que Chabot/Ste-Marie confient à l’ordinateur est de leur présenter de façon aléatoire des images combinées et transformées selon des règles établies par eux mais dont le nombre de possibilités est sans commune mesure avec ce qu’ils pourraient expérimenter s’ils devaient eux-mêmes faire le choix des images à combiner et fixer les différents paramètres des transformations multiples attendues.

De plus, la présentation à l’écran d’une image en continuelle mutation crée un effet de surprise qui capte constamment leur attention et  aide à saisir au vol et enregistrer les images les plus intéressantes, significatives, émouvantes. Un visionnement d’une heure peut aboutir à la “cueillette” d’une centaine d’images qui, une fois analysées et soumises à un choix commun, seront ramenées à une ou deux et ajoutées à la collection des images retenues.

C’est en revisionnant ces images que Chabot/Ste-Marie font le choix “définitif” qui les mène à la production d’œuvres sous diverses formes: estampes numériques, médias mixtes sur toile, œuvre vidéonumériques et tout dernièrement projection d’œuvres vidéonumériques sur des tableaux de grande dimension. Dans ce dernier cas, le tableau et l’œuvre vidéo existent par et pour eux-même mais l’interaction entre la lumière polychrome et changeante de la projection et la surface colorée du tableau crée des effets saisissants de textures, de relief et de profondeur qui leur fait entrer dans un nouvel espace, dans un autre monde.

Joanne Ouellet

Artiste peintre et illustratrice, le bagage artistique de Joanne Ouellet suppose un voyage au long cours : de l’univers amérindien au monde de l’enfance. Curieusement, les animaux ont toujours fait partie du périple. Les œuvres de Ouellet s’inspirent de la nature, de ce qui fait le bonheur de l’œil. Ses illustrations lui ont valu, en 1981, le Prix de littérature jeunesse décerné par le Conseil des Arts du Canada. En marge de sa production artistique, Joanne Ouellet donne des cours d’illustration à l’École des Arts visuels de l’Université Laval. Elle rencontre aussi des jeunes pour leur parler de son fascinant métier. Joanne Ouellet en profite alors pour leur montrer quelques livres parmi la centaine qu’elle a illustrée.

Réjane Sanchagrin

Réjane was born February 24, 1933 in St-Tite in the Mauricie . Self-taught, she began painting in 1968. Sanchangrin has a sensitivity and discretion that demonstrates a work inspired by a world of subtlety. She painted portraits with a wispy contact glance, or even the style of a garment, she reveals the mood of the painting. Its floral still life shows the same technique as in the palette that you find in the picture. Réjane Sanchagrin always touches very physically and morally. Having seen so many emotions in the eyes of patients ( she was a nurse in the art ) , Réjeanne Sanchagrin showed his paintings the years she spent in the hospital sector . If every detail of his work expresses a specific emotion , the complete work is mainly inspired by the human mind. The last years of his life, Réjane Sanschagrin dedicated only to painting.

Réjane Sanchagrin was born on Feburary 24, 1933 in St-Tite, Mauricie. Self-Taught, she started painting in 1968. Réjane Sanschagrin is still very touched in front of physically and morally disable people and also in front of the helplessness of young people. By having seen so many emotions in the eyes of the patients threw the years in hospital areas, many of these emotions are still present. She abandons the emotions that she captivates from the others on her canvas. If each of her work translates a precise emotion, the overall work is essentially inspired by the human spirit. Since the last five years, Réjane Sanschagrin has done only paintings. Near the sixties, she brings richness to the time that passes by. By defining the existence of all artist as being a succession of passion and anguishes, she affirms the necessity of letting things live after us. – She died in 2008

Gérard Dansereau

Gerard Dansereau

Born in Montreal in 1949, Gérard Dansereau has a love for Color, forms and texture. He invites us in a very particular world that is his own. His work is made of styled animals with a familiar expression that brings them near human expressions. Illustrator, he has work in editing, publicity and he has also taught graphic arts at Ahuntsic College.

Gérard Dansereau received numerous illustration and graphic arts prizes notably the prestigious Coq D’or of Publicity-Club for the sign Hergé à Montréal. He created a special pin for the astronaut Julie Payette for her first flight in space. We can find Dansereau’s paintings in Quebec, in Toronto, in Mexico and the U-S.

Gérard Dansereau has received several awards and his works stand out as contemporary yet joyous and lively. His feline creation called Kat Mandou is a recurring presence along with a string of animal characters.

Whether abstract or figurative, his paintings are prized by several collectors worldwide.

Gérard Dansereau is a painter who uses his instinct for pure pleasure in order to create works of art with a touch of humor, poetry and the joy of living. For the last few years, he has devoted most of his time to painting. Thanks to his exploration of several artistic disciplines, his work is a vibrant mixture of harmonies.

What has he done?
He has earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, he worked for several years in the fields of publicity and publishing as a graphic artist and an illustrator.

What he beleives in 
His humanist values mean that the social dimension of art has always been a prime concern of his. He was involved with Amnesty international on the design of a poster which was used worldwide. His work has also been used in the promotion of children’s rights.

Gérard is always evolving but still very contemporary and he manages to redefine himself while still expressing strenght and the same intensity with colors.

His latest paintings show energy and assurance; but where is Kat Mandou? Good question.
His best shots
He has received several awards for his work as an illustrator and a graphic artist, one of them given by the Publicity Club of Montreal for his poster « Hergé à Montréal ».

His work even went in orbit! That started when astronaut Julie Payette bought one of his paintings and later asked him to design the personnal emblem which she would be wearing on her mission aboard the NASA space shuttle. We love him! Yes, you can fall in love with Dansereau. His paintings can be abstract or figurative but they share the love of collectors worldwide.

He can touch a vast array of individuals with a wide range of formal knowledge yet he remains loyal to his creed and to his spirit.


Charles DeBelle

 

Charles de Belle

1873-1939

Painter, draughtsman, illustrator, Charles de Belle was born in Budapest in 1873. As a boy he drew and painted with the encouragement of his uncle. On his 16th birthday he went to Paris where he studied with Mihàly Munkàcsy in Paris from 1889 to 1892. He won several scholarships and later, an annual grant from the Royal Academy in London, which enabled him to travel and study in Europe at Antwerp (1885 onwards); Paris (1889 onwards); London, England (1883). In Ireland he was an illustrator for the Dublin Timesand he also married an Irish girl. He later returned to England. He lived in London from 1893 to 1912 where he contributed with illustrations to the Illustrated London News, the Lady’s Pictorial and for Blackie & Son, William Collins Sons & Co.

 

De Belle arrived in Montreal in 1912 with his wife and children. He presented his canvas “In Flanders Fields” to McGill University in memory of Dr. McCrae author of the poem “In Flanders Field” and who was a member of the McGill faculty of medicine.

He was a member of the Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He died in Montreal in 1939.De Belle became a painter of portraits, landscapes, and children. He did some exceptional winter scenes.

In his paintings de Belle developed his own method of fixative for his pastel work and mounted his pictures between two pieces of glass. He started working in oils about 1904. He shift to oils when ill health deprived him of the rigid control of his hands, so necessary in pastel works.

He held two large exhibitions in Montreal in 1923 and 1925. He also exhibited at the Johnson Art Galleries Limited, Montreal, and the T. Eaton Co. Toronto, 1934.

His work is in private collections in U.S.A., England, Scotland, Ireland, Europe, and in Canada at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Provincial Parliament Buildings, Quebec; Residence of Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec.

Marc Martel

Marc Martel

Date and place of birth
Marc Martel was born in Lévis in 1933. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Buckingham before settling in the Quebec City area to continue his studies.

Training and career
An Arts graduate of Université Laval, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières, Marc Martel began sculpting in the early seventies while pursuing a teaching career. He refined his art through a number of internships in Canada, the United States and Europe and has honed his skills with concrete, bronze and ceramics. A prolific artist, Marc Martel has participated in 25 exhibitions, including 13 solo exhibitions, and was the subject of a retrospective in 2001. His sculptures are exhibited in several Canadian galleries, and his works form part of many private collections.

His work and his art
Drawer, painter, engraver and jeweller by turns, Marc Martel is a versatile artist who established his name with sculpture. His works, rich with symbolism, are fertile, original and expressive. Through his imposing sandstone and concrete murals, his terracotta busts of famous figures or his miniature bronze pieces, Marc Martel has a talent for conveying the essential. He bases his approach on a noble philosophy, a single-minded desire to make sculpture «accessible without being easy, that speaks to people, awakens their senses and carries them forward.»

In recent few years, the sculptor has turned his creative energies to a series of patinated bronze birds. Since 1993, the artist has made more than a thousand drawings in a small sketchbook, from which he developed 180 models produced in a limited run of only eight pieces. These pieces, which rarely exceed 30 centimetres, inspire joy and gaiety, while their skilful contours attest to the sculptor’s mastery of his art. The sculptures are named for descriptive characteristics, which effectively breathes life into each bird. André Pitre

Andre Pitre

Ever since he gave up architecture to pursue his painting, André Pitre’s art has evolved with continuity and coherence. André Pitre stands out as one of the most promising artists of his generation. His art tends towards harmony and beauty but under the pallet’s lavishness and composition he expresses his preoccupation for the human condition and fragile pleasures we try to protect as well as unheard anguish we all try to conquer. Inside both abstract and constructed spaces, figures come and go. They may be real or recalled from the past, as if the artist retained only the memory of their presence on the canvas. With Pitre, nothing is certain; anything is possible. As a reflective being, he never rushes to paint his subject; he has the wisdom to let the subject come from within.

If we look at the ensemble of his paintings since he began painting in 1993, we are faced with an enormous amount of work which has been conceived by sequences. Each component illustrates a state of being represented in life’s different stages. These ever changing moments in time are well incarnated in an intense and delicate space where beyond the figures’ apparent calmness is hidden drama. His figures never impose their presence; they are discreet and meld with other elements. Their presence, however, is increased tenfold as we understand precisely their psychological complexity.

Simon Carmichael

Simon Carmichael

Born in Quebec in 1953, self-taught, I owe much to the painter Georges Marcil, which for me was both a teacher and a friend. He always encouraged and supported me in my work.

I like to paint the landscape. It provides a basic structure on which I prefer rather avoid adding until settle the balance and order of my table.

I think the character of a man is in many ways determined by the landscape in which he lives. A painter tries to discover the structure and character of the landscape he painted as to recognize and express his. This requires, in both cases, a long and patient apprenticeship.

We painted his country because we recognize in him.

Rita Otis

Native de la région Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean, Rita Otis fait ses études en art multidisplinaire à l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Rita Otis poursuit avec un  baccalauréat en enseignement. Un stage en France et quatre stages à Estampe Sagamie amène la démarche de Rita Otis à la sérigraphie. Son travail se démarque par les sujets qu’elle exploite; le microscopique, les cellules, les matières végétales sont au coeur des préoccupations picturales de Rita Otis.
